Add sticky scroll cards to WordPress

A deck of cards for process steps or chapters. Each one sticks near the top as the page scrolls, and the next slides over it into a neat pile.

Type

A Grinner block

Find it

Press + and search “Card Pile”

Phones

Still piles, with smaller steps in one column

Speed

Styles only, no script

What you can change

The settings worth knowing.

A preset, where the cards stop, and how much of each stays in view.

Card Pile presets, four small piles, straight, receding, dealt at an angle and split

Preset

Four ways to pile

Straight stack, Recede where covered cards shrink and fade, Dealt with narrow tilted cards, and Split with a picture beside the words.

Card Pile top offset, a card stopping below a header with the gap marked

Top offset (px)

Where cards stop

100 by default, to clear a sticky header. With no sticky header, about 28 looks right.

Card Pile step, a small step and a big step between piled cards

Step between cards (px)

How much shows

The strip of each covered card left in view. Bigger steps build a taller pile.

Card Pile section tone, a light pile and a dark pile side by side

Section tone

Light or dark

Auto, Light or Dark. On a site without a style kit, choose Dark in a dark section, because Auto can’t tell.

How to add it

Three steps. No new tool.

1

Install Grinner free

It’s on WordPress.org. Or go to Plugins, Add New, and search for Grinner Blocks.

2

Add Card Pile

Press + and search for Card Pile, pick a preset, then write each card.

3

Set where it stops

Choose the top offset, the step and the section tone, then publish.

Good to know

Fair questions.

A set of cards that stick near the top of the screen as the page scrolls. Each new card slides over the last, so they gather into a pile, like steps you read in order.

No. It’s the page scrolling and the cards sticking, done with styles. Recede uses the browser’s scroll animation, and browsers without it show a plain pile.

Yes. Below 600px the steps and picture bands get smaller, everything sits in one column, and Split puts the picture on top.

Dealt cards straighten and Recede becomes a plain pile, but the cards still stick. A card with keyboard focus rises to the top, so its button is never hidden.

No, only its button links. Keep cards short too, since every card takes the tallest one’s height.

Pairs well with

Try it with these.

Card stacking turns the cards you already built in a Group into a pile. Card Pile gives you ready-made step cards with four presets.

Pin one column while the other scrolls, for a side-by-side story.

Bring in the heading above the pile with a Section entrance.
