Add smooth scrolling to WordPress anchor links

Links to a spot on the same page glide there instead of jumping, and stop a set distance below the top so a sticky header never covers the heading.

Type

Find it

Grinner Blocks settings, Smooth scroll

Phones

Glides the same, with one offset for every screen

Speed

A site-wide switch, off until you turn it on

What you can change

The settings worth knowing.

Then scroll back up

Scroll offset (px)

Stop below the header

From 0 to 500px. Set it to your pinned header’s height.

Scroll offset (px) 40

Top offset (px) 40

Same number, same line

Top offset (px)

Match your sticky column

A sticky column’s top offset can clear the header in the same way.

How to add it

Three steps. No new tool.

1

Install Grinner free

It’s on WordPress.org. Or go to Plugins, Add New, and search for Grinner Blocks.

2

Turn it on

Open the Grinner Blocks settings and switch on smooth scroll.

3

Set the offset

Match the Scroll offset to your sticky header, add anchors to your sections and link to them.

Good to know

Fair questions.

Smooth scroll is a Grinner site setting. Links to a spot on the same page glide there instead of jumping, and stop a set distance below the top. Use it so in-page links feel calm and a sticky header never covers the heading you land on.

No. It’s one offset for every screen, and it doesn’t follow the header’s real height.

Not yet.

No. The offset only works while smooth scroll is on.

Links jump instantly, and the offset still applies.

Pairs well with

Try it with these.

A header that stays at the top and turns to frosted glass.

One column stays pinned while the other scrolls past.

Underlines, pills and fills on menu links, and a mark on the current page.
